# Equipment Types

> Set up types before equipment — capacity and UoM live here.

## What you'll do

Define the categories of equipment you run — Tri-Axle, Belly Dump, End Dump, Tractor-Trailer, etc. Capacity and unit of measure (UoM — tons, cubic yards, loads) is applied to the type, not the truck.

## Before you start

* A list of every truck and trailer category you operate.
* Standard capacity per type (e.g., 22 tons for a Tri-Axle).
* The UoM you bill in for each type.
* This page **must** be completed before [Equipment](/onboarding/master-data/equipment).

## Walkthrough

    Click **Create Equipment Type**.

  <Step title="Name the type">
    Use the name dispatchers and drivers say out loud — Tri-Axle, Belly Dump, End Dump, Tag-Along, Pup, Quad. Avoid internal codes.

  <Step title="Set default capacity and UoM">
    Capacity is the standard load this type carries. UoM is what you bill in (tons, cubic yards, loads, hours). Material tracking and ticket totals depend on these values.

  <Step title="Repeat for every category">
    One row per category. Don't create a type per truck — that's what [Equipment](/onboarding/master-data/equipment) is for.

## Verify

Settings → Equipment Types lists each category once. Capacity and UoM are populated on every row.

## Common mistakes

<Warning>
  **Skipping types and going straight to equipment.** Without a type, a truck has no capacity or UoM. Tickets won't compute material totals, and exports to accounting drop quantity. Always set up types first.
